Silicon Valley Residence
This project — a collaboration with the world-renowned architecture firm Snohetta — pairs bold architecture with an eclectic contemporary art collection.
Set at the rear of a shallow bowl, the home’s unique architecture comprises several sweeping forms set at intersecting angles, forming complex interior spaces within a largely transparent envelope.
Radiant heating and cooling systems embedded in the ceiling meant narrow ceiling clearances for recessed lighting. Large in scale and designed for entertaining on a grand scale, this is also a house for a family, which called for an environment that is comfortable and livable day to day.
EJA worked closely with the architecture and interior design teams to successfully negotiate the complex forms of the architecture and create even illumination across the interior, with a lighting plan designed to follow the curving architectural forms, resolve the challenges of intersecting angles, and light the artwork in a way that is subtle but effective.
Recessed lighting keyed to the furniture plan helps define individual areas within the home’s open plan, carefully placed to work in tandem with decorative fixtures.
Dichroic glazing in the liminal spaces between home’s public and private wings reflects and transmits light in a range of colors, becoming a work of art in its own right
On the exterior, strategically placed accent lighting illuminates pathways, trees, landscape elements and monumental artwork, while preserving the integrity of the night sky.
