This project — a home for avid art collectors and patrons of the arts — draws on EJA’s long history of experience in art lighting, characterized by a consistent commitment to the permanence and prominence of the art.

In a departure for architects Backen & Gillam, (now Backen & Backen), the architecture for this home is contemporary, with a distinct nod to  midcentury modern design. Both architecture and landscape were conceived as a backdrop for the extensive collection of contemporary art and sculpture, both indoors and out.

The goal for the lighting design was to form a consistent canvas for the collection as a whole, while highlighting individual artworks and creating a warm and inviting living environment. On the interior, the lighting is indirect and understated, helping to focus attention on the architecture’s subtle details.and helping to create a balance between the architecture and art installations. Landscape lighting creates a subtle glow, supporting but not overpowering the outdoor sculptures, which are individually lit by directed accent lighting.
