Kua Bay

Set on the Big Island of Hawaii, this quietly sophisticated home is designed to embody the breezy, indoor/outdoor lifestyle of the islands. The goal for the lighting was to match the elegantly casual architecture of Walker Warner Architects with balanced lighting that provides an easy flow from interior to exterior environments.

The primary entry, carved out of the lava, provides a serene and magical sense of arrival. Downlighting simultaneously illuminates the entry, highlights the lava, and smooths the transition from the organic entry sequence to the clean lines of the contemporary architecture. Subtle uplighting illuminates the allée of trees leading to an expansive open-air pavilion with through views to the ocean. The impact is soft and glowing, enhanced by fixtures custom-designed by interior designer Nicole Hollis that are carefully placed throughout the landscape.

Cozy pools of light delineate destinations within the home’s large, open spaces. On the interior, the interplay between sculpture and light is pervasive — a sculptural privacy screen, a delicate art installation on the wall of a child’s room, a collection of objects elevated by soft lighting — each element contributing to a place that feels singular and special.
