For this LEED Platinum, Net Zero Energy home in Hillsborough, lighting functions as a shaper of space, seamlessly integrated into the contemporary architecture.

A series of glass pavilions is topped with butterfly roofs that appear to float above the walls, which alternate between glazing and rammed earth. The primary goal was to light the underside of these floating roofs with a continuous glow of light, maintaining consistency and balance despite the significant slope of the roofline. Within the interior’s continuous open space, lighting is architecturally integrated to highlight the open casework without interrupting the clean lines of the ceiling. Lighting plays a particularly important role in shaping the home’s most visually arresting feature — a soaring stair tower leading to a private reading nook, designed to provide a visual connection between earth and sky.
