Set in one of San Francisco’s most prestigious neighborhoods, this project with frequent collaborator Nicole Hollis and architect Stephen Willrich involved an extensive renovation of a traditional city dwelling.

Designed as a family’s forever home, the house was completely reimagined to enable them to showcase and enjoy their world-class art collection, which includes pieces by Yayoi Kusama and Olafur Eliasson. The team employed a very specific approach, utilizing a lighting and control system that employs a broad range of natural white light, remixing the balance of red, green and blue to adjust the way light renders color to allow customized lighting for each work of art.

The interplay between the traditional structure, the contemporary design interventions and the extensive art collection presented a number of challenges, including coordinating lighting systems within the extensive amount of steel used in the structural reinforcements. Dark hues, complex materials and rich textures throughout the house called for careful calibration to account for the impact of lighting on color and hue. In the garden, accent lighting helps define the perimeters of the various outdoor spaces, while reinforcing the formal, linear style of the landscape design.
