The Howard Backen Estate
This estate, featured in Architectural Digest and on the cover of the book Back to the Land, is one of famed architect Howard Backen’s most iconic projects. The goal for the lighting was to support the architecture’s beautiful balance and seamless connection between indoor and outdoor environments.
The design of the lighting takes its cue from the glow of the central fireplace which, as in most of Howard Backen’s residential projects, lies at the heart of the architectural concept for this residence set on a spectacular site overlooking the Napa Valley. Using indirect lighting, the team worked to form a natural interplay between natural and human-created light, highlighting the various layers of experience and the home’s effortless sense of flow. Strip lighting washes the ceilings with light, calling attention to the texture and craft of the rustic interiors.
