Meadowood Spa
This addition to Napa Valley’s famed Meadowood resort, with architecture by Backen & Gillam Architects, (now Backen & Backen), is designed to melt into the surrounding trees and landscape. The lighting scheme provides safe passage through the wooded site, while emphasizing the connection to the land and the contours of the site.
Subtle lighting on the dark-hued, indoor-outdoor structures draws attention to the scale and sculptural quality of the architecture, blurring the line between indoors and out. Soft indirect lighting provides a sense of passage through the treatment rooms and a nuanced sense of enclosure within the largely open-air environment. The emphasis throughout the project was to create a sense of serenity within the unique all-suite spa environment.
